A former Wisconsin football quarterback has finally earned a starting role after transferring to the UConn Huskies this off-season.
Quarterback Nick Evers was once a four-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class and held a top-ten ranking at his position. Despite being the ninth-ranked quarterback in the class, Evers sat behind other quarterbacks and did not receive a chance to touch the field. However, entering his third collegiate season, Evers has finally earned a starting role after exiting the Wisconsin football program and traveling to Connecticut.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Quarterback Exits Program, Earns Starting Role Elsewhere
After two seasons of sitting behind multiple quarterbacks, former four-star recruit Nick Evers has finally earned a starting role with the UConn Huskies. Evers originally signed on with Oklahoma as part of the 2022 recruiting class, but transferred after a redshirt season behind two quarterbacks. The athlete chose the Wisconsin football program after entering the transfer portal and began fighting for the starting role during the 2023 season.
The position battle did not last long as quarterback Tanner Mordecai won the competition early on and dropped Evers down in the depth chart. The quarterback struggled to find a path to the field with Wisconsin due to the depth ahead of him at the position. When the Wisconsin football staff made it clear they would pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal this past offseason, Evers announced he would enter the portal.
After just a short time in the transfer portal, Evers committed to the University of Connecticut Huskies and old-school coach Jim Mora. Mora had previously held the same title with the UCLA Bruins for five years, where he mentored NFL quarterbacks Josh Rosen and Brett Hundley. Mora runs a more traditional pro-style offense that could potentially benefit Evers due to the style of play.
Evers is a big, strong armed quarterback that is able to air the ball out when he needs to with pretty solid accuracy overall. The quarterback has struggled in the past with both accuracy and his ability to escape pressure, but has had two seasons to improve upon those skills while serving as a backup. This season could be a true breakout year for Evers as the stars seem to be aligning for the young quarterback.
Could Nick Evers Potentially Have Earned a Starting Role With the Wisconsin Football Program?
Following the initial news of the transfer of Evers a few months ago, plenty of fans and analysts began wondering what the potential of the quarterback is. Evers initially transferred into the Wisconsin football program following Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo. Evers is the prototypical quarterback that Longo loves to utilize, but the quarterback fell to third on the depth chart rather quickly.
Evers left the Oklahoma Sooners following just one year with the program after former UCF star quarterback Dillon Gabriel transferred into the program. Gabriel announced his intentions to join the program after Evers had already signed his letter of intent and joined with three years of eligibility remaining. Much like his future experiences with Wisconsin, Evers fell to the third-string quarterback role and never quite climbed out of it.
Even if Evers were to stay with the Wisconsin football program and never transferred to the Huskies, the quarterback likely would not have seen the field. The Wisconsin football staff made it clear they wanted to improve their quarterback room via the transfer portal. If Evers were to stay, he would again be relinquished to the third-string role behind backup quarterback Braedyn Locke.
Along with Locke, Evers would also have Mabrey Mettauer and Cole Lacrue behind him fighting for movement in the depth chart. That is not to say that Evers would not potentially win a quarterback battle, but rather that there was more than one player Evers had to beat to prove himself.
