A former Packers tight end found a new home
The Green Bay Packers have a good tight-end core this season. Marcedes Lewis is an excellent blocking tight end. Robert Tonyan can stretch defenses with his quickness in the Packers’ passing game. The team had another option to look at for their roster this off-season. A former Packers tight end was recently drafted to the XFL.
According to a statement by the XFL, the Arlington Renegades took tight end Sal Cannella, as the seventh overall pick in the first round of the XFL draft.
Today, dreams become reality.

Cannella was signed by the Packers this summer. Cannella caught passes in preseason games against the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs. He finished with three catches for 31 yards in the preseason. Cannella was let go by the team in late August. The Auburn product played in the USFL, where he won All-USFL honors. He also worked with the Miami Dolphins in 2021.
Cannella will now be heading to Texas, where his head coach will be former Oklahoma Sooners great Bob Stoops. The XFL season will start in February. Cannella can look to impress more NFL teams with his play at the XFL level. We’ll see if he can use that platform to get back into the NFL.
