Amid another insufferable season in New Jersey, former Packers receiver Allen Lazard asked for and was granted his release by the 3-11 Jets, reported NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Tuesday morning. Lured over to join Aaron Rodgers, his one-time quarterback in Green Bay, during Rodgers’ brief stay with the Jets Lazard has been a non-factor this season. In free agency, he has the chance to join a contender or at least a team with a starting-caliber passer under center.
Lazard’s career has been defined by one variable: whether he has Aaron Rodgers at QB
In 10 games receiving throws from Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor, Lazard came up with 10 catches on 18 targets for just 70 yards. He caught one touchdown pass. 2025 has been his least productive season since appearing in a single game for the Packers as a rookie.

Recently turned 30, Lazard was a reliable red zone target for Rodgers just last year. He only played 12 games but nearly one-sixth of his receptions went for touchdowns (37 REC, 6 TDs). His 14.3 yards per catch were a career high.
Again working with a mishmash of Jets QBs after Rodgers tore his Achilles in 2023, Lazard was less than a consistent contributor. Less than half of his targets resulted in a completion.
Lazard has unequivocally enjoyed his most success when he has had Rodgers as his quarterback. From 2019-2022 in Green Bay he accumulated 20 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards. Over his last two seasons as a Packer he became one of Rodgers’ top pass catchers, bringing in 100 of 160 targets.
The difference is stark. In two years without Rodgers, he has 33 catches for 381 yards and 2 TDs.
Could he reunite with the 42-year-old signal caller in Pittsburgh? Certainly the Steelers could use some bona fide wide receivers, although they previously addressed that need by signing Adam Thielen two weeks ago, following his release from the Vikings.
