The Green Bay Packers have a number of former players in the league today. No one may still be more beloved by Packers fans than former QB Kurt Benkert. No matter where Benkert has gone, he has been supported by Packers fans, specifically on Twitter. Today there was an announcement made that Benkert has signed a deal with a new team. As it turns out that is not the case.
Kurt Benkert Decides Not To Sign With New Team
Benkert took so Twitter today to solidify his decision on his own future:
I didn’t think I was going to have to write anything like this today, but the report came out that I was “assigned” to the Houston team. This is true – however I have not signed a contract with the XFL. The timeliness of the media report is unfortunate and maybe just a coincidence.
For many different reasons, and to the fault of no one in particular, this opportunity no longer feels like the right one to pursue. I am choosing to spend this off-season with my wife and daughter back home to experience normalcy for the first time in a while.

The XFL in 2023
The XFL is now run by a group led by Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. It will consist of eight teams: Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks, and Vegas Vipers.
Kurt Benkert was not going the only former Green Bay Packers player on the Houston Roughnecks. That team, coached by former NFL head coach Wade Phillips, also consists of Chauncey Rivers, Ellis Brooks, Chauncey Manac, and Raleigh Texada. Per fbschedules.com, the XFL season will begin on February 18, 2023. We will see if Benkert make a decision to pursue the NFL or XFL next season.
