.There are not many players left in the NFL from the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV team. In fact, just two remain on the Packers: Aaron Rodgers and Mason Crosby. One player that is still in the NFL, albeit not currently signed on a team, is former right tackle Bryan Bulaga. The Dallas Cowboys recently lost their right tackle Terence Steele to a season-ending injury. Of course, Bulaga was the Packers’ starting right tackle when they won their Super Bowl under now Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy.
The Dallas Cowboys Need Depth at Tackle
Heavy.com writer Evan Reier wrote that the Cowboys do not have a current plan in place to acquire any free agent depth at tackle. However, as Reier wrote, “Losing another starter at either tackle position would be a full-blown injury crisis, and the Cowboys have relied heavily on their offensive line for rushing success this season.”
It is for this reason that Reier argues that the Cowboys should pursue former Packers tackle Bryan Bulaga. Currently, the Cowboys have 40-year old Jason Peters and second-year pro Josh Ball sharing time at the position. An injury to either one of them could doom the Cowboys’ hopes for a Super Bowl.
Signing Bryan Bulaga Has Its Own Risks
All of this being said, it is important to note that Bryan Bulaga has not had the cleanest health history. Remember, he has not played any games in 2022. Additionally, he played just one in 2021 due to back and groin injuries. In nine seasons with the Packers, Bulaga played 16 games just three times. He missed significant time in 2012 (seven games), 2015 (four games), and 2017 (11 games).
Of course, the Cowboys, or any team, cannot and would not expect Bulaga to be anything more than a rotation tackle at this point. Frankly, I would be surprised if any teams come calling for his services, but you never know. In Bulaga’s case, his history with McCarthy and the Cowboys’ specific need at right tackle can make a signing seem possible.
Personally, I just don’t see it as probable.
