The Green Bay Packers have ushered in a new era in 2023.  Between trades and veteran free agents choosing to sign elsewhere, the Packers got much younger this off-season.  After their 8-9 finish in 2022, many believed that the Packers would want to move on from much of their roster, namely Aaron Rodgers, during the 2023 off-season.  Along with Rodgers, multiple wide receivers left in free agency as well.  One of those wide receivers publicly announced why he chose to sign elsewhere.

This off-season saw a number of former Green Bay Packers join the New York Jets.  Nathaniel Hackett, Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, and Billy Turner will all don a different shade of green in 2023.  It was Randall Cobb, however, who offered up a (somewhat) surprising reason as to why he chose to sign with the New York Jets:

Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb are running it back for at least one more season in 2023. Only this time, they won’t be donning Green Bay Packers colors — they’ll be playing for the NY Jets.

Cobb’s decision to leave Green Bay and sign with the Jets is one that many believe was heavily influenced by New York’s addition of Rodgers. After all, Cobb has spent 10 of his 12 NFL seasons catching passes from Rodgers.

Rodgers was a groomsman at Cobb’s wedding. He flew in to watch Cobb graduate from the University of Kentucky in 2016. They’ve been friends on and off the field for over a decade now. That said, Rodgers isn’t the only reason Cobb decided to sign with the Jets.

The 12-year NFL veteran spoke to the media on Wednesday and revealed why, aside from Rodgers, he signed with the Jets this offseason.

Cobb highlighted his admiration of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as one of the other reasons behind his decision. On top of that, his wife is also originally from New Jersey. Cobb obviously prioritized following Rodgers, but more went into his decision than just that.

Cobb told reporters on Wednesday that he knew change was coming this offseason following the Packers’ final game of the season.

“I knew that that was gonna be the last time that both of us together would walk off the field.”

    – Randall Cobb

Many fans speculated that Aaron Rodgers was the biggest reason Cobb chose to sign with the Jets.  Undoubtedly, that most likely played a large role in his decision, but the impact that Nathaniel Hackett had on players during his time in Green Bay is ever-present.
