This off-season, the Brewers saw five players who started games for them during the 2024 season sign elsewhere. Frankie Montas signed with the New York Mets, Colin Rea the Chicago Cubs, Joe Ross the Philadelphia Phillies, Bryse Wilson the Chicago White Sox, and Wade Miley the Cincinnati Reds.
Among this group, Montas has been sidelined by a LAT strain, Rea has been needed in Chicago’s starting rotation due to injury, Ross has a 4.50 ERA as a multi-inning reliever, Wilson has a 5.79 ERA as a swingman, and Miley has been on rehab assignment after undergoing elbow surgery last summer.

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Miley is expected to exercise an opt out opportunity on June 1 that would make him an available free agent.
Former Brewers starter expected to test market on June 1

When Miley signed a minor league contract with the Reds in January, June 1 was a date penciled in where he could exercise an opt out if he desired. Wittenmyer believes that Miley will opt out and test the open market.
Miley, who is 38 years old, has appeared in seven minor league games this year. Across 19.1 innings he has allowed 19 earned runs, which equates to an 8.84 ERA. Opposing batters have a .368 batting average against him this year.
Putting these numbers aside, Miley has shown signs of getting back on track recently. On May 20 he threw five scoreless innings and on May 30 he allowed two earned runs over just as many innings.
Even with the recent improvements, it’s hard to envision Miley getting a MLB deal as a free agent. However, opening for starting pitchers pop up all the time and Miley’s track record of success in the big leagues may earn him another opportunity.
