Former MLB All-Star Avisail Garcia, who also played two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, has decided to hang up his cleats.
In a social media post on Instagram, the 34-year-old Garcia announced his retirement from baseball.
“Today I formally announce the end of my career in Major League Baseball after 12 seasons of dedication and hard work.
Thank you to God for the blessing of fulfilling my childhood dream—of playing baseball at its highest level,” wrote Garcia as the caption for his post.
Garcia also showed appreciation and gratitude to all the people who made his baseball journey possible — and memorable.
“Baseball gave me far more than I could have dreamed: achievements, experiences, and values I will carry with me always. I close this chapter with pride and gratitude, ready for new chapters in life,” added Garcia in the closing paragraph of his touching message.
Garcia had a short tenure with the Brewers
The Venezuelan Garcia inked a two-year, $20 million contract with Milwaukee in the winter of 2019. During his stint with Milwaukee from 2020 to 2021, he hit .255/.331/.444 with 31 home runs, 101 RBIs, 58 walks and a 107 OPS+ across 188 games and 722 plate appearances. He had a player option worth $12 million with Milwaukee for the 2022 campaign but he declined it. Instead, he went to the Miami Marlins for a bigger payday, signing a four-year, $53 million with the National League East Division club.
Garcia’s best days in MLB were with the Chicago White Sox. He earned his only All-Star nod in 2017 when he was still with the White Sox. He also played for the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.
Overall in his big-league career, Garcia slashed .263/.316/.417 with 140 home runs and 524 RBIs.
