Defensive backs coach Jerry Gray left for the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week. While most of the coaching staff seems to be staying the same, the Packers will have to find someone new for this position. Many names have been linked to the Packers job opening with one former Badger being in the mix.
Former Badger Aubrey Pleasant Linked To Packers Job Opening
Pleasant played four years in Madison from 2005-08. He was a solid corner but his playing career ended in college. He has been coaching defensive backs ever since. He spent time at the University of Michigan as well as with the Rams and Lions. After being fired by the Lions last season, Matt LaFleur brought him in as a defensive consultant. He would be one of the youngest candidates at only 36 years old.
Other Candidates
The Packers job opening has no shortage of candidates. Many have wondered whether former Badgers defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard would want to step into this role. Al Harris is a name that has been thrown around as well. Matt LaFleur is well-connected in the NFL and the Packers have a desirable group to coach. Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas are a fun group to work with. The Packers should have no shortage of people who want the job.
The Packers are counting on continuity in the coaching staff to bring success. The hope is a couple of new faces can come in and elevate play enough to push the Packers back into the playoff picture.
