The NFL is often dubbed the “not for long” league because teams quickly rise and fall, with only a few dynasties standing the test of time. According to one league executive, a power shift in the NFC may already be in motion. In a recent report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the anonymous front-office figure took aim at the 49ers while applauding the Packers. They pointed to Green Bay’s young core after its commanding Thursday Night Football win and directly contrasted it with San Francisco’s situation.

The Green Bay Packers offensive line is shown during the first quarter of their game against the Washington Commanders Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Shown are offensive tackle Anthony Belton (71), guard Sean Rhyan (75), guard Elgton Jenkins (74), offensive tackle Jordan Morgan (77) and offensive tackle Rasheed Walker (63).

“This is how you build a young team,” the anonymous front-office executive texted Russini. “…they’re the anti-San Francisco.”

The Packers are surging into contention largely because of their blockbuster trade for Micah Parsons. Green Bay managed to pull off such a high-priced move by leaning on a foundation of young talent still on rookie deals. San Francisco does not share that advantage, raising the question of whether the 49ers are starting to fade as an NFC powerhouse.

    The Packers rising, 49ers stumbling

Russini notes that the 49ers have stumbled with several recent roster moves, and those missteps could soon push San Francisco into a full-blown crisis.

“For all the praise Lynch and his staff have earned, some recent roster decisions are catching up to them, Between the 2022 and 2023 drafts, the 49ers made 18 selections. Only seven of those players are currently on the active roster — one of them being Purdy,” Russini wrote in her article.

In 2023, the 49ers used a third-round pick on kicker Jake Moody, a move that drew heavy criticism at the time and still does today. Moody never found consistency in San Francisco, and the team cut ties with him on Tuesday, cementing his draft selection as a major mistake.

The 49ers now need to restock their pipeline with talented players on affordable contracts. If they fail to do so, they could struggle to stay competitive in the coming years.

For the Packers, Love and Parsons have already built a strong connection. That only helps Green Bay, which now gets extra rest before heading to Cleveland to face the winless Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Week 3.
