Brett Favre is accused of receiving $1.1 million dollars in welfare funds. The scandal is still unraveling but many people have been vocal about their criticisms of Favre. Up until this point, it has just been individual fans. Now, brands are starting to drop Favre as well. ESPN suspends the Brett Favre radio segment amid welfare scandal.
ESPN Suspends Brett Favre
Brett Favre is a frequent guest star on ESPN Milwaukee. Favre’s popularity in the state of Wisconsin makes him a great guest to be able to bring on weekly. It looks like those days are ending. Good Karma Brands, who owns ESPN Milwaukee, is the first media outlet to take action against Favre. Up until this point, it has just been individuals speaking out. No reason was given for the suspension and Favre does still appear on the website. Considering the ongoing scandal, this is probably a good move by the station.
New Details Keep Emerging
It is worth noting that Favre has not been officially charged with any crime. However, the evidence coming out against him has been pretty bad. Text messages between him and former Mississippi governor Phil Bryant did not do anything to help Favre. This scandal is also in the early stages meaning new details are emerging every week. What this suspension signals to me is that ESPN Milwaukee wants to keep Favre off the air at least until all the details come out. Also, Favre’s popularity is plummeting and he might not be a guest that many people want to listen to anymore.
This is a fall from grace for the former Packers QB. Even with the antics of the end of his career, most Packers fans used to think highly of Brett Favre. That has completely changed. Fans are rightfully upset about this scandal and it seems that the sponsors are beginning to follow suit. As ESPN suspends Brett Favre over the welfare scandal, it will be interesting to see whether any other sponsors drop Favre as well.
