Aaron Rodgers could have used help this season
Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his best season in 2022. The Packers’ future Hall of Fame quality didn’t even crack ESPN’s Top 100 most valuable players for the season. In Rodgers’ defense, the back-to-back MVP played on an offense plagued by injuries; he also played most of the season with a broken thumb on his throwing hand.
After the season, Rodgers admitted that he needed more help to make the Packers a championship competitor. One former NFL player agrees with Rodgers’ comments. However, the insider criticized Rodgers before suggesting what player could help bring the quarterback back to elite status.
Rodgers needs an All-Pro to be elite?
Bart Scott was talking on ESPN’s Get Up Thursday about his frustration with Aaron Rodgers’ priorities. Scott took offense to Rodgers talking about what it would take to win an MVP instead of focusing on the Super Bowl. He compared Rodgers to Tom Brady and said Brady was the greatest quarterback of all time because he was willing to put the team first, unlike Rodgers.
Scott used the example of Brady restructuring his contract to make less money so his teams could add talent to win championships. He said that because of the contract the Packers gave Rodgers, the team has to abide by “his wishes.” Scott added that Rodgers needed outside help to have a chance to be a top-tier quarterback again.
“And I think DeAndre Hopkins is the only thing that could put him to that elite level,” Scott said. “I mean, they have to stack the deck.”
The Packers were starting to make improvements
Scott’s comments are a little harsh. Sure, the Packers would have been better in spades had Davante Adams been on the team. But the offense showed improvement with rookie Christian Watson in the second half of the season. Hopkins could make the Packers contenders. But the Packers should be contenders with a healthier Rodgers and Watson and Romeo Doubs in their sophomore campaigns.
