A report was released on Sunday from the New York Post saying Drew Brees and NBC sports would be mutually parting ways after one season. Drew Brees responded to the reports with a post on Twitter:
“Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided. I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I’ll let you know.”
Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season, making his announcement official in March of 2021. While the tweet was obviously sent in jest, the “I may play football again” line sparked interest on social media. Many comparisons were made about Tom Brady, who recently called off his retirement and returned to the NFL. In 2021, Brees helped call Notre Dame football games and also served as a studio host for the network’s NFL show, “Football Night in America.”
Changes Amongst Announcers this Off-Season:
Brees not returning for the 2022 season “seemed mutual,” per Marchand. He also reported that the 43-year-old preferred working games as opposed to the Football Night in America studio show. Cris Collinsworth is now in place as lead game analyst for Sunday Night Football. Because of this, NBC didn’t have many spots to offer Brees. Marchand also stated that NBC initially believed Brees would succeed Collinsworth in the booth. However later that belief “soured.”
