The Packers certainly can use a big upgrade on the defensive line. Kenny Clark is a dominant player inside, but he needs a little help. Kingsley Keke stepped up this season, especially when Clark was out. They still can use another guy. That is where the Packers can look at Christian Barmore, defensive tackle from Alabama. Alabama is a factory for defensive linemen and Christian Barmore looks to continue that trend. The Packers can certainly use someone like Barmore on the line next to Clark for help. With that being said is what we know about Christian Barmore.
His Two Years at Alabama Were Good
Christian Barmore’s two years for Alabama, even though he wasn’t a full time starter, were really good. In the 2020 season he had a great year for the Crimson Tide. He had 37 tackles, 15 of them solo, and also had eight sacks on the year. He had three forced fumbles, which for a defensive tackle is really impressive. His NFL draft stock rose especially with the games he had against Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl where he was un-blockable. Then he topped it all off with another dominant performance against Ohio State in the National Championship game where he was harassing top-five quarterback prospect Justin Fields. It is early for him, as he is really young, to be declaring for the NFL draft as a sophomore. Though who can blame him as he had two solid seasons for Alabama. He might be the best interior lineman in this draft class.
Abilities
Christian Baremore may be raw, but he certainly has a lot to offer. He can play the three technique really well and can create havoc against opposing interior offensive linemen. He’s also really shifty for his size and has a plethora of moves in his arsenal, especially his swim move. Looking in the National Championship game, he was beating the Ohio State offensive line with quickness. On top of that, has some raw power to push the pocket back into the lap of the quarterback, collapsing it. Again, he is raw so he needs the right coach and system that will help him really realize his potential. The sky is the limit for him and on the right team can be a real dominant defensive tackle in the NFL.
What He can Bring to The Packers
What Christian Barmore brings is first of all is a upgrade over Dean Lowry and Tyler Lancaster. He would be another piece to the lineup next to Clark and Keke, which can be a pretty good group. Additionally, he can help bring out the interior pass rush that the Packers have been lacking, especially against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship. He reminds me of Rashan Gary because of the of high potential and skill, but it is raw. Certainly, it will take time for him to develop to become a dominant player. Lucky for him, has a guy like Kenny Clark to help him out. He might be the final piece we need for the Packers to have a real dominant defensive line.
Will the Packers Draft Him?
Now the packers hold the 29th pick overall in the NFL draft this year. With that being said, drafting Christian Barmore can be a possibility. Barmore can be a good value pick at 29, but will the Packers take him? No doubt the Packers need to address the defensive line and taking him can help with that. Picking him up first round is debatable, but if he is there day two Packers have to scoop him up. Christain Barmore might help finally solve the problems along the defensive line.
