The 2022 edition of the Wisconsin High School Volleyball State Championship takes place from November 3rd through 5th at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All four divisions will be in action at various times throughout the three days. Let’s take a look at the seeding for Division 4:
#1 McDonell Central Catholic
The reigning #1 seed is the defending Division 4 state champion. McDonell Catholic was the #2 seed in the final four last season, defeating Wonewoc-Center and Wabeno/Laona to claim the state title. With a 36-14 record last season, McDonell has improved on that this year, being 39-12. They were part of a three way tie in the Cloverbelt West conference with all three teams sitting at 6-1. Either way, Bloomer and Stanley-Boyd are out. McDonell Central Catholic is one of four teams remaining and is looking to go back-to-back and appear in their third straight state championship game.
#2 Athens
Athens comes out of the Marawood North conference where they were a perfect 5-0. Tanille Hartwig’s squad is heading to Green Bay with a sensational 32-5 record. Athens hasn’t dropped a single set so far in the playoffs, and they’re coming off a win over last year’s state runner up, Wabeno/Laona. This is a team that has won eight of their last nine and isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon.
#3 Monticello
The one thing on Monticello’s mind is redemption. They were the #1 seed in the final four last season only to be upset in four sets by #4 Wabeno/Laona. Monticello kept it close (23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25), but ultimately, they were the only #1 seed not to make it to the state championship game. This season they draw the #3 seed, even though they only have one loss on the year. Their only blemish came on September 2nd, a 2-1 set loss in the Brodhead Tournament to Evansville. The same was said last year as Monticello came to the Resch Center with just one loss on the season. Will history repeat itself?
#4 Wonewoc-Center
Wonewoc-Center is the third team to be making back-to-back final four appearances. They were swept by last year’s state champion, McDonell Catholic in the semi-finals last season. Now, they were one of two teams with a 12-2 record in the Scenic Bluffs conference and come in at 21-3 overall. This team started the season 1-2, eventually falling to 3-3, but they have won 18 straight games and have all the momentum in the world as they look to upset the reigning state champions.
