The 2022 edition of the Wisconsin High School Volleyball State Championship takes place from November 3rd through 5th at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All four divisions will be in action at various times throughout the three days. Let’s take a look at the seeding for Division 3:
#1 Howards Grove
It should be no surprise to see the reigning state champion back as the #1 seed. Howards Grove dominated their way through a 35-3 season. Brett Damrow is a sensational coach and has guided this team to not one, not two, but three state championships. The last time a team not named Howards Grove won the Division 3 state championship was in 2018 (Lake Country Lutheran). This team seems absolutely unstoppable. They’ve won 25 straight games and haven’t dropped a set since September 16th against Division 2’s New Berlin West. Howards Grove lost their first game of the year to 37-7 Division 2 Xavier, but they beat them the very next day. Their other two losses come to the #1 team in the state, Oconomowoc. Oconomowoc is 36-2 in Division 1, let that sink in.
#2 St. Croix Falls
St. Croix Falls was the only team to come out of the Heart O’North conference with a perfect record. They currently sit at 34-4 on the season and survived a five-set thriller against Unity to make it to the sectional finals. That was a huge win for the program as they’re coming off of a 18-4 season where they lost in five sets to Unity in the sectional last season. The big redemption win over Unity followed by a sweep of Westby gives the #2 seed a lot of momentum against a very formidable #3 seed.
#3 Randolph
Jeff Kohlbeck’s team won the Trailways West Conference with a perfect record and has the most overall wins out of anyone left in the Division 3 playoffs. With a 37-6 record, Randolph is looking to make a statement. They were bounced in the Sectional last season by state runner up, #1 Lake Country Lutheran. Randolph has only been in Division 3 for two full seasons, but they’ve adjusted well and are just one game away from the state championship.
#4 Wittenberg-Birnamwood
On paper, everyone is going to count out Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Anyone going against Howards Grove is an immediate underdog, but this team is no joke. They made it all the way to the sectional last season with a 21-15 record, and the program continues to go in the right direction. Currently sitting at 27-7, this team absolutely earned their way to the final four. They survived not one, but two five set battles in the tournament. #4 Bonduel was the first in the Regional Final, then it was #1 Edgar who they beat 15-13 in set five of the Sectional Final.
