The Packers defeated the Patriots 27-24 in overtime on Sunday. There was one play in the game that almost sealed the game in regulation. On a 3rd down play Aaron Rodgers threw deep to Romeo Doubs. Doubs made the catch but as he hit the ground, the ball came out of his hands. By rule, this makes the play an incompletion. There was one player that knows this rule very well. After the play, Dez Bryant reacted to the Romeo Doubs no catch.
Dez Bryant Reacts To The Romeo Doubs Play
That’s the catch all over again!
— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) October 2, 2022
Dez Bryant had an episode of deja vu after the Romeo Doubs play. “That’s the catch all over again!” he tweeted out. It was clear that Doubs had possession of the ball. It was the impact with the ground that caused the incompletion. This play was similar to Bryant’s play except that Bryant’s no catch happened outside of the end zone. The ball was jarred loose as he was reaching for the goal line. Doubs was already in the end zone so there was no “football play” to discern. One thing is for sure, Dez Bryant thinks that the Romeo Doubs play should have been a catch.
Rule Inconsistency
Allow me to go on a small rant. If a wide receiver catches the ball at the 1 yard line and reaches the ball across the goal line, it is immediately a touchdown. Even if the ball is jarred loose, the second that ball is over the line, the play is dead. Put a pin in that statement for a second. Also, the ground cannot cause a fumble. If a player gets tackled in the open field, hits the ground and the ball is jarred loose, the play is dead because the runner is ruled down. However, in a case like the Doubs play, because he is catching the ball in the end zone, he has to catch the ball, get both feet in, secured the ball all the way through the contact with the ground for it to be ruled a touchdown. The rule is the rule and, especially in the Dez Bryant case, the Packers have benefitted from it. There are just some inconsistencies that are frustrating as a fan.
It is very funny to me that Dez Bryant is still very bitter about that catch. So much so that he has to tweet about similar plays like the Romeo Doubs one. The good news about this no catch is that the Packers went on to win the game and that is all that matters.
