The New York Yankees’ glory days appear to be long gone and need to be re-established. With a 60-59 record on the campaign and being in last place in the American League East, it appears as if they will miss the playoffs and make massive changes in the front office once the season ends.
Derek Jeter Mentioned in Yankees General Manager Rumors
Brian Cashman is currently the general manager of the New York Yankees, and if they don’t turn this ship around in less than two months, he could be shown the door. A New York Yankees legend is potentially in line to become the next general manager if Cashman is fired at the end of the season.
Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is in line potentially to become the next general manager for this historic franchise, which has not won a World Series title since 2009 against the Philadelphia Phillies. New York has been stuck at 27 titles and is looking for 28.
Derek Jeter has had experience in an organization before in an executive role. He was the CEO and part-owner of the Miami Marlins from September 2017 until February 2022. Jeter has been retired since after the 2014 season, and this will be the first time he shows up to Yankees’ old timers Day next month. The event will be held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Saturday, September 9.
Shaun Morash of WFAN believes that Derek Jeter could become more of a regular at Yankee Stadium in the near future.
“We saw the first sign that Brian Cashman’s end might actually be near,” Morash said. “If there’s anything we know about Hal Steinbrenner, he doesn’t want to go outside his comfort zone and conduct a search.
Many New York Yankees fans have voiced their displeasure this season with Brian Cashman and want a new man in the front office.
New York Yankees Legend Derek Jeter To Have Ownership?
Hal Steinbrenner is the current owner of the New York Yankees, and would he be willing to have someone else have a stake in ownership since Derek Jeter had it once before?
“He clearly wanted to be an owner and have a say in baseball operations,” Shaun Morash of WFAN said. “The Yankees are his team…what if it comes with Hal letting him buy a minority stake in the team?”
Derek Jeter is 49 years old, and it would be interesting to see how he would do if this job opened up and all of this did occur. Regardless, Tthis would make the New York Yankees fan base very happy.
Morash said, “Why is Derek Jeter now coming back for Old Timer’s Day? Is there not a comfort there with a guy who just ran a team? If he’s closer to the team and in the building…I believe if Brian Cashman is fired after this year or next year, Derek Jeter will be the guy to replace him. He ran the Marlins. He got Cashman to take Stanton.”
If Derek Jeter were to take the position, he would have a lot of work to do with trying to make trades, sign the right free agents, and revamping the New York Yankees farm system. Player development has been one of their biggest problems, and they haven’t had a solid player that has come through their farm system since Aaron Judge. Derek Jeter would be viewed as the savior that the New York Yankees franchise needs in the front office.
