Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard recently took to social media and expressed his thankfulness for having the time to be with his children, as playing for the Bucks brought him away from his family for a while.
Recently, Lillard posted on his Instagram story a short video of him lying in bed with his kids, with a simple yet heartwarming caption attached to it.
“The best thanksgiving already,” he said, adding in a praying and heart emoji.
Family time was one of the things that Damian Lillard had to sacrifice after his move from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Bucks. Not only that, he also went through a rough patch in his personal life as he filed for divorce from his wife, Kay’La Lillard, only days after he finalized his transfer to a different franchise.
The circumstances affected not only his personal life but also the intensity of training he did for a certain period. He called this period “the hardest transition in my life.”
Damian Lillard on Moving to Bucks: “The Biggest Challenge is Being Away From My Kids”
In an interview last year, Damian Lillard discussed the ups and downs of moving from Portland to play for the Bucks. For over a decade, the Trail Blazers had been his only home, and the move to Bucks, while an exciting change, also proved to be full of challenges.
“That’s probably been the biggest challenge, being away from my kids,” Lillard said in the interview. “Being away from everything that I’ve known. It’s a hurdle. It is an everyday battle. Any father or any mother would know that. When you wake up and you are able to be physically present with your kids, there is nothing else that you love more in the world.”
Lillard also described how he missed being physically with his children, but is still thankful for the professional opportunity he had.
“So being away from my kids, I wake up every day like, man, they are not seeing my face today physically. I can’t hug them. I can’t go pick my son up from school,” he added. “I can’t pick up my twin daughter and son. It’s things that you just can’t do being this far away. And those are things that I love to do the most and I take a lot of pride in. When you get stripped of that, and for a great reason, there is a lot to be thankful for. But it’s just hard.”
