The Dallas Mavericks with Luka Doncic last season made it to the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics but fell short of the ultimate goal. Dallas has not won an NBA title since the 2011 season.
As for the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo, they last won an NBA title in the 2021 season. It will be a huge season for both the Mavericks and the Bucks.
Twitter Rumors Swirl About a Possible Team-Up With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic On the Dallas Mavericks
There have been many teams who have shown interest over the last few days in Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Golden State Warriors are interested in him and the San Antonio Spurs are one of the surprise teams who could be in on him in the future.
In the past, the New York Knicks seemed to have interest, but those talks disappeared when Antetokounmpo signed his contract extension with the Bucks. Keenan Womack of Sports Illustrated said about Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic potentially playing together one day for the Dallas Mavericks:
“Rumors have been swirling on Twitter/X about a possible Giannis Antetokounmpo signing in Dallas if the Milwaukee Bucks were to struggle to get to another championship this year, but they are just rumors for a reason, as there are several obstacles in the way to prevent such a signing from happening.
For one thing, Antetokounmpo isn’t an unrestricted free agent until 2027, and it would require the star to request a trade in order for him to leave Milwaukee, where he won a championship in 2021. The franchise also added Damian Lillard last offseason, giving Antetokounmpo an elite running mate.
The simple numbers don’t add up, either. When looking at cap space, having two players on contracts like Luka Doncic‘s and Antetokounmpo’s would severely restrict the franchise’s ability to supplement the roster with additional pieces. As good as the pair would be, there have been many instances of failed super teams due to the fact that they lack elite role players.”
Yeah for trades to work, the cap space numbers need to work out. The Dallas Mavericks are paying Klay Thompson, Luka Doncic, and Kyrie Irving the big bucks at the moment. Even with those three players, Dallas is a championship contender without Giannis Antetokounmpo. The talks of Antetokounmpo going to another team will not go away.
Player Option For 2027-2028
If Giannis Antetokounmpo was not traded by the time his player option hits before the 2027-2028 season, it will be interesting to see if he picked up or not. If Antetokounmpo declines his player option, there will be a lot of teams lining up for him in free agency.
Teams like the Dallas Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, the San Antonio Spurs, and others would reach out to the future hall of famer. Antetokounmpo is only 29 years old. By the time the summer of 2027 hits, Klay Thompson could already be retired from the NBA and it is also possible that Kyrie Irving is no longer playing for Dallas.
The Mavericks are going to do everything they can to help Luka Doncic win a title. If by then he hasn’t won a ring, they are no doubt going to try and pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo.
