The Green Bay Packers are preparing for a new era with Jordan Love starting quarterback in 2023. Currently, the team has three quarterbacks on their roster: Love, rookie Sean Clifford, and Danny Etling, who has mainly played on the practice squad.
To support Love, the Packers may consider adding a low-cost veteran quarterback. Or will it be low-cost? We outline two possible former MVPs, Nick Foles and Matt Ryan, and the pros/cons of each if the Packers were to sign them.
Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles
Last week, the Indianapolis Colts released quarterback Nick Foles, who had previously won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, filling in for an injured Carson Wentz. Despite having experience as both a starter and a backup, Foles has yet to find a long-term team. However, given his 10 years of experience in the league, he could be a good fit as a mentor for Love, sitting behind him on the team.
Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP, is a potential option to support Jordan Love as a backup. Ryan is a free agent and has not signed with any team for training camp. However, given his former NFL MVP experience, he could mentor Love and guide him on how to excel in the league.
Pros/Cons of a Vet Backup QB

One advantage of the Packers signing a veteran quarterback like Matt Ryan or Nick Foles is to mentor Jordan Love. Although some fans may question why Love would need additional mentoring, performing at one’s best in the NFL is essential. Another benefit is having a veteran QB to stay competitive if Love is injured or does not meet the team’s expectations.
However, the downside is that some veterans may come with a higher price tag than a young QB, which could be problematic for the Packers, who are already financially constrained.
Regardless of the outcome, Jordan Love will be the Green Bay Packers’ starting quarterback in 2023. It will be exciting to see how the room performs in training camp and whether they add another QB like Nick Foles or Matt Ryan or stick with their current options.
