Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold reiterated with members of the media on Friday, July 26 that adding starting pitching/length options remains a priority as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. Around the league Zach Eflin and James Paxton have already been dealt and unfortunately for the Brewers their odds at landing a 2024 All-Star starting pitcher have taken a significant hit.
The Milwaukee Brewers odds at landing a 2024 All-Star starting pitcher via trade have taken a significant hit.
On X, formerly Twitter, Jon Heyman posted that if 2024 All-Star Garrett Crochet is traded that he would need a contract extension in order to pitch in October. Crochet demanding an extension and indicating that he won’t pitch in the post-season if that doesn’t occur is a bold strategy but it makes sense from his perspective. This year Crochet is the top arm available at the deadline, he has an injury history, and with two years of arbitration remaining ($800,000 salary this year) he is seeking some financial security.
Garrett Crochet declined to comment on the situation and is focused on pitching for the Chicago White Sox.
Scott Merkin, White Sox beat reporter for MLB.com, indicated that Garrett Crochet declined to comment on the reports of him demanding an extension. Crochet indicated that his current focus is on making his next start for Chicago. It was also revealed that his pitching plan going forward is to maintain a starters workload.
The Milwaukee Brewers tend to make strategic contract extensions.
As a small market team Milwaukee tends to execute contract extensions at strategic times. They gave Freddy Peralta financial security before he transitioned fully into the starting rotation, Aaron Ashby was similarly extended, and most recently Jackson Chourio got a lot of money before making his MLB debut but in the long run that could turn out to be a very team friendly deal. The odds of the Brewers acquiring Garrett Crochet and extending him when his value is at its peak seems like a long shot.
