Chicago Cubs Move 2021 World Series Champion Out Of Starting Rotation

For the Chicago Cubs it is crunch time.  They have had a great year so far, but if the season ended today they would miss the play-offs for they are currently a half game back of the red hot Arizona Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card spot.  In order to maximize their chances they have made the decision to move a starting pitcher into the bullpen.

Chicago Cubs News: 2021 World Series Champion Drew Smyly has been moved to the bullpen.

After winning the World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, Drew Smyly signed with the Chicago Cubs.  He made 22 starts a season ago and pitched to a 3.47 ERA.  This year he has made 28 appearances with 22 of them as a starting pitcher, but his ERA is inflated to 5.24.  His role going forward will now be as a relief pitcher.

“I get it. I haven’t been doing my job as a starter.  So there’s nothing I can say or any type of way I can feel about it. I wish I was throwing better.”

For Drew Smyly this is a role that he is familiar with.  With the Braves in 2021 he appeared in 29 games with 23 of them being as a starting pitcher.  In the post season he operated out of the bullpen only and despite the “demotion” his main focus is on helping the team win games.

“This is one of the reasons I chose to sign back here.  I thought the Cubs were really close to winning. And we are. We’re right here in the final stretch, so I’m happy to fill any type of role for them. I just want to help the team win and try to get us to that next step.”
