The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers square off in just under two weeks. The 2023 season begins for these two teams at Solider Field for their 207th meeting. Justin Fields and Jordan Love are looking to start a new era. The Packers committed to Love this off-season by trading away Aaron Rodgers and investing in a young talented offense.
The Bears also committed to Justin Fields by trading away the number one overall pick. That move allowed the Bears to surround Fields with enough weapons for him to be successful, at least that is what they hope. However, the Bears made a somewhat surprising move at quarterback prior to the start of the regular season.
Chicago Bears Release Quarterback P.J. Walker Prior To Their Matchup With The Green Bay Packers
Sunday, the team announced the release of quarterback P.J. Walker. The Bears signed Walker in March after he spent the previous three seasons with the Panthers. The Carolina Panthers’ quarterback played in 15 games, starting seven, throwing for 1,461 yards and five touchdowns with 11 interceptions. His passer rating was 63.9.
He completed 11 of 23 passes for 96 yards with two touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 55.7 in three preseason games. Justin Fields, Tyson Bagnet, and Nathan Peterman are the three quarterbacks left on the roster following his departure.
In addition to being connected to Matt Eberflus and D.J. Moore, with whom he worked as a member of the Colts and Panthers, respectively. Furthermore, he provided Carolina with starting experience by going 4-3 as an injury replacement between 2020 and 2022. A lackluster preseason led to speculation that Bagent might usurp the veteran, who was also a star in the 2020 XFL.
By releasing Walker, the Bears save $150,000 while incurring a $1.5M dead salary-cap charge.
