A former star quarterback wants to back up Aaron Rodgers
The Green Bay Packers have yet to trade Aaron Rodgers to his preferred destination, the New York Jets. The trade is expected to happen before the NFL draft at the end of April. However, it’s possible the two teams will not be able to reach a deal this offseason. Even with the destination not finalized, an All-Pro quarterback recently came out and said he’d be willing to backup Aaron Rodgers next season.
According to a video posted by Dov Kleiman, Cam Newton said he’d be willing to be the backup quarterback for Rodgers. Newton feels he can be one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the NFL.
Update: Cam Newton says he's willing to be a backup in the NFL.

Could Newton play for the Packers?

The number one pick in the 2011 draft didn’t specify if he’d prefer to be the backup with the Packers or Jets. It’s possible he’d want to play for either team. Although, as of this offseason, the Packers plan to make Jordan Love the starter for next season. However, according to Matt Schneidman with The Athletic, general manager Brian Gutekunst has said all options are on the table:
“I think right now, all options are on the table,” Gutekunst said when asked about an unlikely reunion between Rodgers and the Packers this summer. “It’s not trending that way, and I’m hopeful we can facilitate this and get this accomplished. But he’s come back under certain circumstances before where maybe he wasn’t the happiest with everything that was going on and played very well. So we’ll just see how all of this transpires.”
Let’s say hypothetically, Rodgers stays with the Packers for next season, and Love forces Gutekunst hand in asking for a trade. Newton would then be a candidate to backup Rodgers in Green Bay.
Cam Newton hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2021 season. He played with the Panthers through the 2019 season. Newton played with the New England Patriots in 2020 before playing with the Panthers for a second stint in 2021.
