Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has found himself an ally in Damian Lillard when it comes to his advocacy for the youth after the Milwaukee Bucks seconded his statement about pressure on kids.
On his Instagram account, Lillard reposted a quote by Doncic not even 24 hours after win over Spurs wherein he criticized the pressure the older generations are putting on kids who are dreaming of becoming athletes.
“Big big facts. It’s a problem,” he said in the repost.
What did Doncic said? Doncic called out no one in particular but he is greatly concerned about how pressure takes away joy from kids in playing basketball and other sports because they are being treated like professionals at a young age.
Kids are walking away from basketball and other sports because we’ve replaced joy with pressure. When we treat young players like pros, we lose the friendship, growth, and fun that make sports special. This has to change.
The quote is said to be related to the Dallas star’s advocacy in promoting sports to the youth.
The Luka Doncic Foundation formed a sports council comprising of the greatest basketball players from different generations, with the aim to uplift children and teens through sports.
Damian Lillard’s own advocacy for the youth
It is great to see established NBA players using their platform to create a better sports environment for the next generation.
In 2018, Lillard launched the RESPECT program meant to encourage the youth to be more respectful to people of all walks of life. The program is also focused on education to help boost graduation rates.
“I think my presence is what makes kids respect it,” Lillard said. “Them seeing me here makes a huge difference.”
Lillard won NBA Cares Community Assist Award multiple times for his contributions on community growth through philanthropic work, charity, and other initiative.
