LaMelo Ball is on a tear right now for the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 40 points in his team’s last four games. Does that mean he is better than Milwaukee Bucks’ Damian Lillard? A former Buck seems to think so.
DeMarcus Cousins, who played briefly for the Bucks in 2021-2022 season, expressed amazement to Ball’s game to the point that he is putting him in Top 5 of the league’s best point guards.
The Sacramento Kings legend made the statement during a guesting at the “Run it Back” podcast where he, Michelle Beadle, Chandler Parsons and Lou William discussed the leap that the Hornets PG is making this season.
He declared him as a Top 5 PG but some were not convinced.
“We’re talking SGA, Steph [Curry], Luka [Doncic], Dame, [Jalen] Brunson, Ja [Morant]. You got him over those guys?” Parsons asked.
From those names, Cousins picked Dame as the odd man out.
“I’m taking him over Dame right now. He’s for sure over Dame. In this moment right now, I think LaMelo is outperforming Dame,” he said.
For comparison, Ball is averaging 31.1 points per game, the second best in the league behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. He tops the league in most field goal attempts per game at 24.9.
On the other hand, Lillard is averaging 26 PPG on 18 attempts.
Damian Lillard is man on a mission this season
What Cousins said might just fire up Lillard in the next games.
The eight-time All-Star earlier said that he is all about redemption this season after his ‘subpar’ 2023-2024.
He currently averages 26 points per game, higher than his average last season.
He attributes his struggles to mental conditioning.
“As much as it was a challenge for me as far as conditioning, it was more of a mental challenge than anything else. I think that’s my greatest takeaway from it. The mental strength, realizing there’s a lot more in there than you think. When you are tired, kind of just dying in the middle of (training) it. To come out the other end of it after spending that time with it, it really did something for me mentally,” he explained.
