Bucks’ Bobby Portis playing his way back into favor after rocky start

Bobby Portis got off to a poor start this season, on both ends of the floor. He wasn’t shooting particularly well. He wasn’t rebounding like Milwaukee Bucks fans are used to. The defense, which will always be a flaw to some degree, was disastrous.

Then you look up and, 23 games in, he’s averaging close to his typical numbers. The rebounds are still down, but his scoring is and shooting percentages are up. Portis may not be an ideal fit for what this team wants to do, but he’s at least back to looking like himself. Cue sigh of relief.

Shooting hot streak has Portis up near normal numbers

Looking like himself. That’s more than you could say earlier this season. Through nine games, Portis averaged 8.6 points and 5.7 boards on 41% from the field. He was only making 44.7% of his two-point attempts, easily producing his lowest effective field goal percentage (48.1) since his rookie season. He compiled a grand total of one steal and one block.

It’s not like he’s been perfectly consistent since then, or transformed his defense. He just had one of his worst outings this season in the loss to the Knicks (1-7 from the field). That and a 4-14 clunker against the Heat, however, came on the heels of three straight games scoring an efficient 18-plus points. For the most part, he’s back to being the BP of seasons past.

Lately, Portis can’t miss from beyond the arc. In his last 14 games, Portis has drilled threes at a 51% clip. His two-point percentage is nearly identical. That’s below what it was in his four seasons as a Buck, but in line with his performance in 2024-25. His scoring has increased to 12.7 points per game and he’s come up with eight steals. Small wins on defense is all the Bucks are looking for (still no blocks in that span – yikes).

Overall, he’s up to 11.1 PPG and 5.7 RPG on 47.5% from the field and 45.1% on threes. He’s also attempting nearly three fewer shots per game and playing 85% of his minutes from last season. His numbers are basically what you’d expect, with the exception of the low rebounds.

Portis did his part in the Bucks’ win over the Pistons Wednesday night, giving them 30 minutes, 13 points, nine boards, and five dimes. His defensive shortcomings granted, hopefully he can stay on track and provide his typical offensive punch on the other end.
