Great teams don’t just have great head coaches. They have great coaching staffs. Assistant coaches are just as important to a team as the head coach. Everyone has blind spots so assistant coaches can help give different perspectives and bring different strengths to the table. The Milwaukee Bucks are a team that has a great coaching staff. One Bucks assistant coach, Mike Dunlap, earned a nomination for the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.

Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer has been friends with Dunlap for decades. It was no surprise that when Budenholzer got the Bucks job, he gave Dunlap a call. He was immediately in. Dunlap specializes in offensive rebounding and zone defense. He is clearly a person that Budenholzer trusts which allows him to make a greater impact on the team. Interestingly enough, Dunlap’s hometown is Fairbanks, Alaska. Bucks assistant coach Mike Dunlap has been nominated for the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.
Dunlap Is A Legend In Alaska
Alaska is not a place where many basketball talents come from. Dunlap over his career has had many firsts for Alaskans in sports. He was the first Alaskan to play at the Division I level in college. When he became an NBA head coach for Charlotte, it made him the first Alaskan to coach in any of the four major sports. As an assistant with the Bucks, he won the NBA championship adding another first for an Alaskan. It is no surprise that Dunlap has been nominated for this honor.
We focus so often on the star players and head coaches in the league. The teams that do best are the ones that are built with strong leadership across the board. The Bucks have been able to sustain success because they have assistant coaches like Mike Dunlap.
