Brook Lopez becoming the NBA’s king of ‘splash and swat’

In the Bucks’ latest win over the Charlotte Hornets, big man Brook Lopez had a season-high six blocked shots. But he paired that with three made three-pointers for a very rare NBA stat line. His six blocks and three made three-pointers was the first time this season that a player had those two stats in their stat line. We may have to start calling Lopez, who is known by the nickname, “Splash Mountain,” the “King of Splash and Swat.”

The first time an NBA player had six blocks and three three-pointers in a game was back in 1989 when Seattle’s Derrick McKey did it in a game versus the Washington Bullets. More than seven years later, Houston’s Robert Horry had six blocks and six three-pointers to become the second player to accomplish this feat in March 1996.

Since 1989, there have been 37 times that a player had six blocks and three three-pointers in a game. It was accomplished by 21 players. Lopez has now done it four times in his 15-year career, three times with the Bucks and once when he played for the Nets. His four games with six blocks/three three-pointers is tied for the second most in league history. Myles Turner, a center with the Indiana Pacers, tops the list with five such games (his last game with these stats was in March 2021).

NBA players with six blocks and three 3-pointers in a game

Here are the players with multiple games with six blocks and three three-pointers in the same contest:

    5-Myles Turner
4-Raef LaFrentz, Brook Lopez, Kristaps Porzingis
2-Kevin Durant, Shawn Marion, Karl Anthony-Towns

While Lopez is tied for second in the six blocks/three three-pointers career stats, he does have the number one spot in another “splash and swat” category. Lopez is one of only three players to have seven or more blocks and four or more three-pointers in the same game. In fact, Lopez has done it three times. Raef LaFrentz and Jaren Jackson, Jr., are the other two players who have reached the seven blocks/four three-pointers stat line, and they accomplished it once each.

The greatest ‘splash and swat game’ in NBA history

Lopez also has the greatest “splash and swat” game in NBA history. As a member of the Nets, Lopez on February 15, 2017, had eight blocks and went six-for-10 from the three-point line in a game versus… the Bucks! Milwaukee won that game, played in Brooklyn, 129-125. Lopez ended the game with 36 points.

If we drop the numbers down to three blocked shots and three three-pointers in a game, Lopez is still in the Top 5. Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant tops this category with 36 career games with three blocks and three three-pointers in the same game. Lopez is fifth in this category with 25 games.

Most career games with three blocks/three 3-pointers in a game

Players with 20 or more career regular season games with three blocks/three three-pointers in the same game

    36-Kevin Durant
    34-Kristaps Porzingis
    28-Myles Turner
    26-Dirk Nowitzki
    25-Brook Lopez
    22-Rasheed Wallace
    21-Shawn Marion

Eighteen of Lopez’ 25 career regular season games with three blocks and three three-pointers are in a Bucks’ uniform. Sixteen Bucks’ players have accomplished these numbers in a game, with Brad Lohaus (5), Giannis Antetokounmpo (4) and Tim Thomas (3) following Lopez.

Lopez has four games with three blocks and three three-pointers this season. The other Bucks’ player to reach these two stats in a game this season is Jrue Holiday. He had three blocks and three three-pointers on October 22 in the Bucks’ 125-105 win over Houston.
