‘All options’ are on the table for the potential return or departure of Aaron Rodgers.
Could Aaron Rodgers Return to the Green Bay Packers In 2023?
Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst met with the media ahead of this week’s 2023 NFL Draft Combine and addressed the 6 foot 2, 225-pound elephant in the room…Aaron Rodgers. Gutekunst said while he’s yet to meet with the future Hall of Famer, ‘all options’ are on the table when it comes to Rodgers’ future (or lack thereof) with the club.
“He’s a great player, but until we have those conversations, I think all options are on the table. We need to have those conversations. We want what’s best for the Green Bay Packers, what’s best for him so we’ll get to that coming up.”
Gutekunst went on to mention that he hopes the club and Rodgers can come to an agreement on his (Rodgers’) future before the NFL’s official beginning of free agency on Wednesday, March 15.
Aaron Rodgers Contract Details
If Rodgers were to return to the Packers on his current deal, the California-native would make a mere $1.16 million as a base salary while ballooning to a $31.62 million cap hit for the club. In 2024, Rodgers would make a base salary of just $2.25 million while coming in at a $40.7 million cap hit for the Packers. In 2025, the base salary for Rodgers would be $15.85 million while the cap hit for Green Bay would be an astounding $59.3 million. In the final year of his currently scheduled deal, Rodgers would make a base salary of an even $10 million in 2026, while his cap hit would inflate to $53.45 million for the club.
Aaron Rodgers signed a three-year, $150.8 million contract extension with the Packers prior to the 2022 season. If the club were to outright release Rodgers this off-season, they’d eat a whopping $124.1 million dead cap ‘penalty’ for doing so.
What’s Next For Aaron Rodgers?
While Gutekunst is eager to meet with Rodgers, the legendary signal caller hasn’t helped calm the nerves of Packers fans and media alike as the future Hall of Famer has seemingly added fuel to the fire of retirement rumors anytime he’s been able.
If this is truly it for Rodgers, at least in Green Bay, it’ll end an 18-year run with the Packers, where the California-native led the team to a Super Bowl championship in 2011. Rodgers ranks second in yards all-time for the franchise (59,060), only trailing Hall of Famer, Brett Favre (61,655), while already securing the top spot for the club in touchdown passes (475).
