The Milwaukee Brewers and their ace Corbin Burnes were unable to agree on a salary for the 2023 season. Milwaukee filed at $10.01MM and Burnes $10.75MM. One month ago Brewers GM Matt Arnold said “Look, we’re still open to having conversations. We certainly don’t want anyone to take any of these negotiations personally. We love these guys like crazy.” Now it has been announced that Burnes has lost his arbitration case and will earn $10.01MM during the 2023 season.
The Brewers have won their arbitration case against Corbin Burnes, per source. He will earn $10.01M this season rather than the $10.75M he filed for.

Given how well Burnes has performed over the past few seasons, several fans believed that the Brewers should have just paid the 2021 Cy Young award winner the $740,000 difference and moved on. Not to mention the fact that Burnes’ teammate Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers agreed on a $10.8MM salary for the 2023 season.
Here is what Brewers GM Matt Arnold had to say regarding the arbitrator siding with the team and being unable to come to terms with Corbin Burnes.
“Look, we and he both tried exceptionally hard to come to an agreement. To Corbin’s credit, he has the opportunity to say, ‘No.’ We did what we could to avoid the hearing if at all possible, as evidenced, I think, by the fact that we settled with 10 out of 11 of our cases. That is our hope, that we settle all of these cases before we go to a hearing. We want to be solution-based. We always want to try to get to a place where the player is comfortable. And also, we respect the heck out of Corbin’s right to push for what he believes is fair.”
Burnes has not spoken to the media following this decision. Brewers pitchers and catchers report to spring training tomorrow, in which he is expected to address the media.
