This offseason, star players on the Milwaukee Brewers have been mentioned as trade candidates by numerous writers. Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and Willy Adames are the main three names that come up. These players will continue to be mentioned in trade proposals until a trade does actually happen or they are signed to a contract extension.
The latest player to be mentioned is Willy Adames. Adames was mentioned by Sam Blum, beat reporter for the Los Angles Angels, as the top shortstop trade target. Shortstop is an area that the Angels could use an upgrade at, so naturally he gave his thoughts on a trade package that he believes could work for both sides.
Here is what Blum had to say about a trade package involving Brewers shortstop Willy Adames.
“Possibly trading Luis Rengifo and packaging a top prospect or two could entice a team to part with a shortstop. Willy Adames is probably the best option for a Brewers team that may or may not be trying to be competitive this year.”
Renfigo is a 25 year old super utility player who is out of minor league options. He is versatile defensively as he can play all over the infield with most of his games last year coming at second base. In a pinch, he can play a corner outfield spot as well. He was a silver slugger and gold glove finalist among utility players in 2022.
At the plate, Renfigo broke out last season and displayed some power as he hit 17 home runs over 511 plate appearances. He managed to maintain a low strikeout rate of 15% and had a batting average of .263. However, he drew just 17 free passes and had a .294 on-base percentage. Overall, his offensive numbers equated to a 103 OPS+.
As for the Angels top prospects, two out of the top three players are catchers. The Brewers recently acquired William Contreras, so adding another catcher wouldn’t make sense. No other prospects in the top 10 of the Angles system are projected to be major league ready by 2023.
Blum points out that the Brewers may or may not be trying to be competitive this year. This is likely why he suggested trading a top prospect or two in addition to Renfigo for Willy Adames. However, given that most of the Angels top prospects are years away from the big leagues and that Renfigo is out of major league options, this package for Willy Adames gets a pass from me.
