It was an exciting weekend in Cincinnati as the Brewers battled the Reds in a four-game series. Here is a complete recap of the series and what to expect next from the Brew Crew.
Brewers vs. Reds Game One:
Final Score: 5-4 Brewers
Corbin Burnes was on the bump and had a decent start. The Former Cy Young award winner scattered three earned runs over six innings of work. Shortly after the sixth inning Burnes was ejected for arguing the strike zone, though he was likely done for the day anyway. Burnes went up against Brandon Williamson, who had a similar-looking line. Williamson had two earned runs (one unearned) over six and two-thirds of an inning.
The Brewers had their offense going, Joey Wiemer got the party started with a two-run home run in the second inning. The Brewers struck again the following inning when a run scored off a Victor Caratini groundout After that the game remained stagnant at 3-3 until the eleventh inning. In the eleventh inning, the Brewers’ offense finally strung together two more runs which came off a Caratini fielder choice and a Brice Turang groundout. Heading into the bottom of the eleventh inning the Brewers had a 5-3 lead and Bryse Wilson picked up the save after allowing one unearned run to cross.
Brewers vs. Reds Game Two:
Final Score: 10-8 Brewers
Colin Rea toed the slab in game two and wasn’t too shabby. The right-hander scattered three runs over five innings of work. However, relievers Trevor Megill and Jake Cousins allowed five more runs to cross.
The good news is the Brewers put their hitting shoes on. All ten of the Brewers’ runs came off Reds’ starter Graham Ashcraft. Rowdy Tellez got it started with an RBI single in the first inning, however, the big damage came in the second inning. The Brewers batted around the second inning, there were a bunch of RBI singles and walks before Blake Perkins hit a grand slam for his first career home run, which made the score 9-1 Brewers. The Brewers added one more in the fourth inning with a William Contreras home run but after that remained quiet. Despite some struggles, the Brewers’ bullpen was able to hold on for the win.
Brewers vs. Reds Game Three:
Final Score; 5-1 Brewers
Adrian Houser was on the mound looking for a bounce-back start and had one in a major way. The sinkerballer tossed seven innings of one-run ball and also notably had 0 walks. Ben Lively was up in the Reds’ rotation, he allowed five runs but kept his pitch count down and stayed in until the fifth inning.
The Brewers’ offense was cooking again, they picked up right where they lead off in the first inning when Andruw Monasterio clubbed his first career home run, a three-run shot to give the Brewers the lead. After that, the Brewers remained quiet until the fifth inning when Victor Caratini hit a solo home run and Owen Miller had an RBI single to add to the lead. Peter Strzelekci shut the door in the final inning to give the Brewers another win.
Brewers vs. Reds Game Four:
Final Score: 2-0 Reds
Julio Teheran was on the bump for the series finale. The former Brave tossed six and a third of an inning and allowed two runs to turn in yet another quality start. Unfortunately, Reds’ starter Andrew Abbott had the Brewers’ offense shut down, which resulted in the Brewers missing out on a sweep.
Takeaways:
Overall this series featured a lot of encouraging signs if you’re a Brewers fan. Though the offense was shut out in the final game it showed some signs of life this series after being on a long dry spell. Along with that, the starting pitching was pretty solid throughout the series as well. Let’s hope the Brewers can take these positives into their next series against the Orioles.
