In the St. Louis Cardinals home opener, the Milwaukee Brewers fell victim to some late-inning dramatics. In a game that was headlined between a pitching matchup between Adam Wainwright and Corbin Burnes, it did not disappoint.
The first through sixth innings was the Corbin Burnes show! He recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just one hit. His first two starts have now been back to back outings of one hit baseball!
Although Burnes’s stat line looks phenomenal there was some first inning trouble during this ballgame. Tommy Edman, the Cardinals leadoff hitter, began the game with a lead off triple as Christian Yelich laid out for the baseball and it rattled out of his glove.
Thankfully, Burnes was able to overcome the adversity. The side was retired thanks to a strikeout out the next Cardinal, an infield popup to Nolan Arenado, and then any easy fly out to end the inning. After that, Corbin Burnes unleashed himself by recording five straight strikeouts. He never was in danger of giving up a run after the first inning and he put together a very impressive performance!
With Burnes on the mound, the Brewers were only able to push across one run. That run came in the third inning. Keston Hiura finally ended an 0-20 streak with a double and would then scored off consecutive errors. Adam Wainwright attempted to pick him off and the ball ended up sailed into CF. Then the ball went under Dylan Carlson’s glove which allowed Keston Hiura to score easily.
The later half of this game was when things got interesting. Sadly the Brewers bullpen was unable to deliver and Nolan Arenado established himself as a Brewer killer in a Cardinals uniform.
Preceding Corbin Burnes was reliever Eric Yardley. After recording two quick outs the Cardinals generated two straight hits followed by a walk to load the bases. At that time Yardley generated a ground ball but Luis Urias stumbled with his decision making and his throw to first base was late and a run crossed the plate as a result.
Things got worse in the eighth inning when Drew Rasmussen gave up a go ahead two run home run to Nolan Arenado. In the ninth inning inning the Brewers were unable to push across any runs and lost the game 3-1.
This series will resume on Saturday April 10th with a 1:15pm CT first pitch. These two teams generally play each other tough. Game one of this series was evidence of just that, but unfortunately things did not fall in the Brewers favor.
