On Monday the Brewers stunningly traded All-Star closer Josh Hader to the Padres. They also made another deal with the Rangers to bring in Matt Bush. On Tuesday, the day of the MLB trade deadline, the Brewers elected to trade for relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal.
Rosenthal, who has not pitched since 2020 while recovering from a torn hip labrum and undergoing a procedure for thoracic outlet syndrome, recently threw a showcase. At the showcase his fastball (sinker) average was 95.6 MPH. This was a slight decline from his 97.9 MPH in 2020. However, during the showcase his vertical movement was significantly higher than what we were accustomed to.
Unfortunately Rosenthal’s showcase came to an end due to a hamstring cramp. However, on July 21 he was signed by the San Francisco Giants, but is yet to pitch due to being on the IL with a hamstring strain. According to Jon Heyman, Rosenthal will not get the opportunity to pitch for the Giants for he has been traded to the Brewers.
Rosenthal traded to Brewers. Trevor that is.

Where will Rosenthal fit in and what was the cost?
In order to acquire Rosenthal, the Brewers parted ways with Tristan Peters. He previously was the Brewers #19 ranked OF prospect. In the minors he recently received a promotion, but will now continue his journey through the Giants minor leagues.

As for Rosenthal, he will join a Brewers bullpen that is stockpiled with veterans who have closing experience. Brad Boxburger, Jake McGee, and Taylor Rodgers have all had significant exposure finishing ball games. In addition to those players, Devin Williams has been incredible as of late and also can close games.
With all the recent turn over, this Brewers bullpen has suddenly become very deep. Hopefully that will make a difference as they continue their quest for a fifth consecutive play-off berth.
