Brewers Trade Deadline Acquisition Trevor Rosenthal Likely Out The Remainder Of The Year

On the day of this year’s trade deadline, the Brewers only move consisted of trading for relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal.  Rosenthal had not pitched in a major league game since 2020, but prior to being traded to the Brewers he was picked up by the Giants after a showcase in July.

During the showcase, he injured his hamstring.  Upon joining the Brewers he was rehabbing this known injury and was given a late August timeline to return.  Unfortunately during his third minor league rehab appearance, he left the field with a shoulder injury.

On Saturday, both Craig Counsell and David Stearns provided updates on his health.

The most likely case is that Trevor Rosenthal is out the remainder of the season.

The news on Trevor Rosenthal is in and he is “probably” out for the regular season with a similar injury to Freddy Peralta’s, Counsell said.

David Stearns was quick to make it known that this was a completely new injury that was not on their radar when they traded for him.  He does go on to say that he knew the risks involved when he traded for a pitcher with an injury history.  Unfortunately, this move has back fired, and similar to Dinelson Lamet, Rosenthal’s tenure with the Brewers will likely be over before he can throw a pitch with them.

“This is a completely new injury.”

Rosenthal will be a free agent at the seasons end.  At this point his injury history will play a major role for any team potentially interested in signing him.  It is possible that he re-signs with the Brewers and we see him next year.  He will not make an impact on the 2022 team.
