Brewers: This Trade Target From The Mets Would Re-Unite Team With Switch Hitting Third Baseman

This offseason the Milwaukee Brewers have been busy swinging trades.  Through trade, Matt Arnold has overhauled a vast majority of their bullpen and added quite a few offensive players as well.  On the flip side of that, is the New York Mets.  They have been busy signing free agents and their payroll has skyrocketed.  With signing so many players, a former Brewers third baseman is available via trade.  That player is Eduardo Escobar.

Escobar signed a two year contract last offseason with the Mets.  He will make $9.5MM next year and has a club option for 2024.  The third baseman recently lost his starting spot after the Mets shockingly signed Carlos Correa.  Correa will take over at third base and Francisco Lindor will play shortstop.

With the Mets last season, Escobar’s offensive numbers were slightly lower than normal.  This was particularly evident by his .295 on-base percentage.  Otherwise, he did hit 20 home runs, have a .430 slugging percentage, and post a 106 OPS+.

What would it cost for the Brewers to re-acquire third baseman Eduardo Escobar?

Back in 2021, the Brewers acquired Escobar for the low cost of two prospects in Cooper Hummel and Alberto Ciprian.  If Arnold and company do explore trading for Escobar this offseason, he may again be acquired for very little given that he is a rental player.

It is also possible that the Brewers could sway the Mets into paying a portion of Escobar’s contract.  The Mets recently traded catcher James McCann to the Orioles and are paying $19MM of the remaining $24MM that he is owed.

If Matt Arnold could re-acquire Escobar while persuading the Mets pay a good chunk of his contract, that would be a big deal for the Brewers.  Milwaukee is a very payroll conscious organization but could also use an upgrade at third base.

      HE-IS-NOT-AN-UPGRADE.

People just seem to claim all these players are upgrades to Urias who’s 25, entering his prime and has put up 3.1 WAR each of the last two years.
