The Brewers added depth to their infield by signing Brock Holt on Monday. His deal is pending a physical.
Brock Holt is a career .271/.340/.374 hitter with 23 career home runs and 206 career RBI’s. He made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was traded to the Red Sox prior to the 2013 season. He finished eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2014, his first full season.
Holt has never been a consistent starter in his career due to a variety of injuries. In 2016, he missed significant time because of a concussion that also affected his play in 2017. In 2019, he missed the first two months of the season with a scratched cornea and shoulder injury.
When healthy, however, Holt is quite the ball player. Holt has made a reputation for himself as a super utility man, playing every position for the Red Sox except pitcher and catcher.
Holt’s best season was in 2015, when he played in 129 games, had a slash line of .280/.349/.379 and was named to the American League All-Star team. Despite missing the beginning of the season last year, Holt ended up having a pretty good year hitting .297/.369/.402. He has hit for the cycle twice in his career, including once in the playoffs. He is the only player in baseball history to accomplish that feat.
It is unlikely that Brock Holt will compete for a starting spot, but he most likely will make the Opening Day roster. However, given the uncertainty at both third base and first base, he may see significant playing time.
