Brewers unwanted history in 2nd shutout loss to Twins

Shutouts have become an unfortunate trend for the Brewers in May. The month began with back-to-back scoreless losses, an 8–0 defeat to the White Sox on May 1 followed by a 10–0 rout by the Cubs the next day. Just over a week later, the Guardians blanked them in consecutive games on May 12 and 13. Most recently, the Twins added to the pattern, posting back-to-back shutouts of their own.

Following Saturday night’s loss to the Twins, Milwaukee has now been shut out six times in May, and in four of their last five games. According to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, those six shutouts tie the franchise record for the most in a single month. The catch? It’s only May 17, meaning the Brewers still have plenty of time to set an unfortunate new mark.

Before facing Milwaukee, Minnesota closed out its series against the Orioles with a shutout victory. After adding two more shutouts against the Brewers, the Twins’ pitching staff has now strung together 33 consecutive scoreless innings. This is a a new franchise record.

With six shutouts already this month, and four coming in their last five games, the Brewers are mired in a very cold offensive stretch. If they hope to stay competitive in the division, breaking this troubling trend will need to happen sooner rather than later.

On Sunday, Milwaukee will look to get back on track by getting the winning column and snapping the Twins 13 game winning streak.
