Milwaukee Brewers trade deadline addition Shelby Miller’s season is over. This was expected after he felt a pop in his elbow while throwing a pitch in his last outing against the Phillies on Labor Day, but the team confirmed everyone’s thoughts on Wednesday by placing him on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow UCL sprain.

Back in May, the Brewers designated reliever Joel Payamps for assignment. He cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Nashville. Payamps, who once had a significant role in Milwaukee’s bullpen, struggled in the big leagues this year posting an 8.35 over 18.1 innings (17 ER) to begin the year.

Since being in the minor leagues, Payamps has posted a 4.73 ERA with the Nashville Sounds. This includes 27 appearances, 26.2 innings pitched, and 14 earned runs. Of his 27 outings, 22 of them have been scoreless, that includes nine of his last 11 during the month of August.

Payamps being selected and re-added to the 40-man roster, thanks to Miller moving to the 60-day IL, which frees up a spot, signals that Milwaukee is giving him another shot. While Robert Gasser remains a bullpen option, the Brewers likely want him to log a few relief outings first. If another roster move is needed, it’s more likely they option a controllable arm like Craig Yoho rather than DFA Payamps again, unless he struggles significantly.

That said, once DL Hall and Grant Anderson return, Payamps could be at risk of losing his roster spot, making it critical for him to make an immediate impact.
