As the Brewers enter the offseason, we continue to gather report cards on all the players. In this report card, we look at the Brewers ace Corbin Burnes. Burnes was really solid again in 2022. He received consideration for his second straight Cy Young award. Here’s how Corbin Burnes looked in 2022.
Corbin Burns 2022 Final Stats
Corbin Burnes was stellar again in 2022. He made all 33 starts and pitched 202 innings. Pitching that many innings and not missing a start is an incredible accomplishment for a starting pitcher. Burnes also mentioned that was a goal of his and he was proud he got it.
In addition to the starts and innings pitched, Corbin Burnes finished second in MLB with 243 strikeouts. That only trailed Gerrit Cole’s 257. It’s no surprise since Burnes has one of the best cutters in baseball and a respectable breaking ball to keep hitters honest. He’s clearly the Brewers’ ace and their best pitcher.
Corbin Burnes Is One of the MLB’s Best
I can only count on one hand of pitchers in MLB who are as good or better than Corbin Burnes. After a horrible 2019, he’s made a quick rebound. Any time he is on the mound, the Brewers always have a chance. Despite a 12-8 record, Burnes consistently pitched against the ace pitcher of the opposing team. A lot of times, he got very little run support. That is on the offense and not him.
The only blemish on the final stat line for Burnes is that he gave up 23 home runs. There were times when the cutter didn’t move or the location wasn’t quite there. As a result, he did become prone to the long ball on a few occasions. I’m sure that is a number Burnes would like to see come down next year.
How Much Longer Is Corbin Burnes A Brewer?
It’s not a subject Brewer fans want to talk about, but Burnes does have two years left on his deal before he hits free agency. The market for Burnes will be incredible. I have no doubt there will be a ton of teams interested in Burnes if he’s traded or hits the market. It could potentially be a difficult decision for the Brewers.
I think the best bet for Corbin Burnes to stay with the Brewers is to take a team-friendly extension. Milwaukee doesn’t have the money to have a payroll to compete with the best teams in the league. It’s not something to sweat about now, however.
There’s no doubt we will see Corbin Burnes take the mound Opening Day in 2023 for the Brewers. I expect him to have a Cy Young-caliber year next season.
