Brewers Reportedly Had Interest In 1B Luke Voit

Despite the MLB being in a lockout, rumors can still swirl. Recently, Joel Sherman wrote in an article that the Brewers reportedly had interest in first basemen Luke Voit and checked in on his availability.

MLB trade rumors put together a synapsis of Joel Sherman’s article. In the article, he was speculating about options for the Yankee’s to consider post-lockout. He specifically states that “Milwaukee had interest in Voit previously”. He never says when the Brewers inquired about Voit. However, he did provide his rationale for a hypothetical trade that would send Voit to the Brewers in return for Lorenzo Cain.

Would a trade involving 1B Luke Voit and OF Lorenzo Cain Make Sense?

From the Yankee’s perspective, Cain’s purpose would be to serve as an insurance policy for Aaron Hicks. Hicks often struggles to stay healthy, which similarly can be said about Cain who had multiple long IL stints in 2021. However, the two paired together could allow for adequate rest while not missing a beat defensively. Theoretically, it could be a great tandem to help preserve both players throughout the duration of a 162 game season.

In regards to the Brewers, Rowdy Tellez was recently tendered a contract. Currently, he is slated to be the starting first basemen. They also have Keston Hiura, Mike Brosseau, and Jace Peterson who can fill in at the position. As a right handed hitter, Voit would slot in as the new every day first basemen. He has a lot of power in his bat and there is not a significant drop between his right vs left handed splits.

If universal DH is implemented league wide post-lockout, having both Voit and Tellez in the lineup would help bolster this team from a power standpoint. You additionally have to factor in recently acquired Hunter Renfroe as well, who is a power hitting outfielder. Between those three bats a lot of home runs would be hit.

At this point in the lockout, we do not know if Voit will be available once transaction can start up again. If he is, Voit is exactly the type of player that Stearns likes to target. For now, we will have to wait for the lockout to end to see what happens.
