For the second time this season, the Brewers have a player who will serve an 80 game suspension.
A few days before the start of the regular season, catcher Pedro Severino was suspended after testing positive for the banned substance Clomiphene. Today, reliever J.C. Mejia was suspended for violating the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Meja tested positive for a drug called Stanozolol.
RHP Trevor Kelley selected from Triple-A Nashville.

The Brewers traded for J.C Mejia in November. His career numbers are not that impressive, so at the time it was a low-risk-high-reward move. This year he has appeared in just two major leagues games in which he gave up six earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. His results at Triple-A Nashville were much better as he had a 0.84 ERA over nine appearances.
Similar to Pedro Severino’s suspension, J.C Mejia will be suspended without pay and is ineligible for the 2022 post season. Severino’s suspension ended up sparking a trade for Victor Caratini. Losing a relief pitcher that the Brewers took a flier on this off-season will not result in an immediate trade in order to replace him.
RHP Trevor Kelley was added to the 40 man roster as a result of Mejia’s suspension.
Kelley was drafted in the 36th round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. Throughout his career he has played in the Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, and Braves organizations. The Brewers signed him to a minor league contract last November.
At age 29 he has logged over 300 minor league innings, all of which have came out of the bullpen. He has a career 2.18 ERA and 36 saves. At Triple-A Nashville this year he was having success for he had allowed just one earned run over 13 appearances.
