After a disappointing 2022 season, the Milwaukee Brewers are certainly going to be making some big changes in 2023. One of those changes is presumably a youth movement that will see several of their top prospects getting significant playing time. While the likes of Garrett Mitchell, Brice Turang, Sal Frelick, and Estuary Ruiz will likely a great deal of at bats in the Majors, one prospect to keep an eye on is Jeferson Quero. The young catcher is the Brewers’ seventh-ranked prospect and just completed competing in the Arizona Fall League. Due to his stellar play, he was named one of the top 30 prospects in all of baseball who competed in the league.
Jeferson Quero Came in Ranked at Number 18
Jim Callis of mlb.com wrote an article that ranked the top 30 prospects who participated in the Arizona Fall League this year. According to him, Quero was the 18th best player of the hundreds who participated. Of Quero, Callis wrote:
“A better bet to become an everyday catcher than [Henry] Davis, Quero is a quality receiver who used his plus-plus arm to erase 46 percent of basestealers while other AFL backstops combined to nab just 17 percent. A bit overmatched by advanced pitchers as a 19-year-old, he projects as an average to solid hitter with gap power.”
This past season, Quero split time between Low-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin. In 75 games with Carolina, Quero hit .275/.345/.412 with six home runs and 43 RBI. He also stole 10 bases in 12 attempts. In 20 games with Wisconsin, Quero hit .313/.329/.530 with four home runs and 14 RBI.
According to the Brewers’ website, Quero’s estimated time of arrival in the Majors is 2024, the same year as top prospect Jackson Chourio. It is certainly an exciting time with so many young players on the precipice of Major League service.
