Eric Lauer has been moved to the bullpen. The Brewers announced the news on Saturday evening before game two of their series against the Kansas City Royals.
Eric Lauer will be pitching out of the bullpen for now. Brewers have Freddy Peralta, Wade Miley, Corbin Burnes lined up for the Cardinals series. Lauer said he’d be available as soon as tonight.

The 27-year-old will still be available out of the bullpen but will be playing behind Colin Rea for at least one start, potentially more. Lauer has seen his velocity dip and has struggled tremendously so far this season. The Southpaw has a 4.72 ERA and a 5.80 FIP in seven starts and covered just 34.1 innings over those starts. So there is a clear motive for the Brewers to do this.
Colin Rea will be taking over Lauer’s spot in the rotation. Rea posted a 4.94 ERA over six games, five of which were starts. These numbers don’t jump off the page but Rea has done a better job of keeping the Brewers in games compared to Lauer.
This should hopefully allow Lauer to figure out his struggles as well as provide Craig Counsell with another left-handed option out of the bullpen. It’s going to be interesting to follow this move and see how it impacts the Brewers’ pitching staff and Lauer’s effectiveness on the mound.
