Winter Meetings are a fun stretch of days during the MLB offseason. It is during this time that signings and trades typically occur. For the Brewers, they already have made two major trades. This does not mean that they are done making moves. Ahead of the Winter Meetings, MLB Pipeline listed each team’s most tradeable farmhand. For the Brewers they picked outfielder Joey Wiemer.
Wiemer is currently the Brewers third ranked prospect. He is also ranked 84th overall among all the prospects in baseball. The 2020 fourth round pick skyrocketed up the rankings after an incredible 2021 season. He backed this up with another solid year in 2022 and has worked his way up to the Triple-A level.
Why would the Brewers consider trading a top outfield prospect in Joey Wiemer?
MLB Pipeline listed a few factors as to why they picked Wiemer as a tradeable farmhand. One being that he is close to seeing playing time in the big leagues. The other being that the Brewers are loaded with outfield prospects, so they would be dealing from a position of strength.
So far this offseason the Brewers have dealt away major league contributors that were not controllable beyond the 2023 season. If the Brewers were to deal Wiemer, it would be to acquire another player(s) to address an area of need.
The Brewers currently could use an upgrade at the catcher position. Pitching is also another area that a team can never have enough depth in. It would be very surprising to see Joey Wiemer traded this offseason, but anything can happen under Matt Arnold, who is the new leader of baseball operations.
