Opening day is almost upon us! This year the Brewers will square off against the Chicago Cubs in a National League Central showdown to begin the new season. April will be a very busy month for the Crew, in which they have just one off day. With that being said, throughout the first month rosters are expanded so that teams can carry 28 players. Currently, the Brewers are set up to have a few extra pitchers with them during this time.
Starting Rotation
Among the starting rotation, there is no competition for final spots. Corbin Burnes was recently announced as the opening day starter and Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Adrian Houser, and Eric Lauer are all locks to round out one of the best rotations in all of baseball. The biggest question is if they will again implement a six man rotation. If that does occur, Aaron Ashby is the favorite to make some starts.
Bullpen
In the bullpen, a lot of last years core is returning. Josh Hader, Devin Williams, Brent Suter, and Jake Cousins are all back for they are still under team control. Brad Boxberger re-signed upon the conclusion of the lockout after a very success campaign in 2021. When you add Ashby into the mix, that makes six returning players who all had significant roles on last team.
There are a few new pitchers who will be making their Brewers debuts this season. It was recently announced that Trevor Gott made the team and Jose Urena is expected to as well. All-together, this is a list of 13 pitchers.
Some news from our morning Counselling session:
— Trevor Gott has been advised he made the team.
— Josh Lindblom was returned to Minor League camp and left this morning with the rest of Triple-A Nashville.
— José Ureña is scheduled for his first Brewers appearance on Sunday.— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) April 1, 2022
With roster expansions throughout the month of April, teams can carry up to 14 pitchers if they choose. Jandel Gustave, J.C. Mejia, and Hoby Milner are all on the Brewers 40 man roster and have yet to be optioned to the minor leagues. All three of these pitchers have minor league options remaining. It is possible that Brewers remain content with 13 pitchers to begin the season.
