Brewers’ Jackson Chourio has poor response to demotion

As a whole, the Milwaukee Brewers’ offense has under performed this season. Their team OPS of .659 ranks 25th in the league, with a lackluster .351 slugging percentage standing out as a major concern. The team’s struggle to generate extra-base hits has been a recurring issue, contributing significantly to their offensive woes, including being shut out five times in May and in three of their last five games.

Searching for answers, manager Pat Murphy elected to demote rising star Jackson Chourio.  Unfortunately, he did not respond well.

Prior to Friday night’s game against the Twins, Chourio had either batted first or second in the lineup all season. He has a .270/.289/.432 slash line as the lead off hitter and .250/.267/.473 line as the second hitter. However, his aggressive approach at the plate, evidenced by a 43.9% first swing rate and overall 56.8% swing rate, has resulted in him walking just four times this year across 196 plate appearances.

Against the Twins, Chourio batted outside of the lead off or second spot for the first time this year as he was placed sixth in the lineup. In this contest, Sal Frelick was the first hitter and William Contreras was second. Twins pitching went on to strike out 16 Brewers batters, with Chourio contributing four himself.

Where should Jackson Chourio bat in the lineup?

Last season, Chourio moved around the batting order, but as his performance improved, he steadily earned a more prominent spot. In 2025, he got off to a strong start, racking up doubles early in the year. However, he’s hit a slump recently, posting just a .211/.237/.316 slash line this month. While Chourio has the tools to be a run producer near the top of the lineup, he’s currently in a funk and Milwaukee needs him to break out of it soon.

I think Churio needs to go down to Nashville until he figures out the swing, other teams have film on him and they are pitching him outside, he takes the bait and swings at air a lot, sure there is the occasional hit and home run, but way to many strike outs and he doesn’t seem to be able to adjust.
