The injury bug has struck Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell again. Mitchell left a contest early this weekend against the Cardinals due to discomfort in his side and underwent testing afterwards. Unfortunately for Brew Crew fans, they have seen this story before.

Since being drafted in 2020, Mitchell, a type 1 diabetic, has missed a substantial amount of time due to injuries. In 2022 an oblique injury cost him 6-8 weeks, in 2023 he subluxated his shoulder in April, underwent surgery, and returned September 28 that year, and last year a finger fracture sustained in spring training kept him out of MLB games until July 1.

The Milwaukee Brewers will be without Garrett Mitchell for at least one month due to an oblique strain

Against the Cardinals, Mitchell strained his oblique. Mitchell told Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that this strain is not as severe as 2022. “I was in more pain then than I was this time, so to me that’s better news,” Mitchell told Rosiak.

Brewers on-field reporter Sophia Minnaert later relayed that Milwaukee expects Mitchell to be out for at least a month or so. If this timeline holds, it will be late May/early June before he returns to the Brew Crew.

What are the Brewers plans in center field while Garrett Mitchell is out?

With Blake Perkins still making his way back from a broken tibia, an injury sustained during spring training, Pat Murphy has revealed that a combination of Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio will play center field. Daz Cameron was promoted after Mitchell’s injury, but will play the corner outfield spots.
